Fall is here! There’s so much to love about the autumn season. In Texas, we finally get a break from the grueling summer heat, routines are back in full swing, and we look forward to holiday events with friends and family. However, fun times can also bring its own set of stressors. There are meals to cook, a house to clean, plus if you’re hosting a holiday event, you may feel the added pressure of not just cleaning your house, but making it festive for the occasion. You may be feeling so overwhelmed that you begin to wonder “Where is the fun in all of this?”
The Struggle is Real
I’ve been there. One of the things we looked forward to when we first bought a house was decorating it for the seasons. When we were apartment dwellers, we didn’t have room to store holiday décor. Every year for the seven years we lived in a one-bedroom apartment, we would longingly pass by the holiday décor. We looked forward to the day we could buy a house and decorate it for the seasons.
After we bought a house, we spent so much time just maintaining and trying to furnish it, we didn’t have much time to think about holiday décor. Everyday décor was challenging enough! I thought decorating was supposed to come natural because I was a woman. It was supposed to be as easy as:
Buy a house + Buy stuff + Put it up = Trés Magnifique
Except it wasn’t.
I didn’t realize how much of it is a skill that takes time to develop.
Something that was particularly challenging to me was decorating the fireplace mantel. I can’t think of anywhere else in the house where the space is as limited as it is on your mantel—especially if you have a shallow mantel shelf. Mine is not even 7” deep.
A Solution to the Problem
It was in this struggle that I came up with an idea. I was frustrated with decorating my own mantel and with finding the time to change it with the seasons. I needed a plan so that I wasn’t always rethinking everything from scratch year after year.
When I looked online for ideas, everyone had totally different items on their mantel from what I had. When they showed pictures from season to season, it was often totally different items in the fall from what they had in the summer. Where did they put all of the leftover pieces? And how much did it cost to buy an entire new mantelscape? Some say they just “found things around the house” but then when you take it from one room, you have a bare spot in that room and before you know it you’re rethinking the whole house just because the season changed! I didn’t have time for that!
What I wanted was a kit that someone already designed for me and has everything I need. All I have to do is put it on the mantel. I looked on Google. I looked on Etsy. I did image searches. Nothing.
How I Can Help You
You may be feeling the same way I felt. You want something pretty, but it takes so much time and energy. The holidays are supposed to be a time to enjoy, but when do we have time to just sit and enjoy it?
I can’t help with everything on your to-do list, but there is one thing I can help with: decorating your mantel. I’m not just giving you the pieces needed for a festive mantel, but I’m giving you a plan. I’ve created an everyday mantelscape-in-a-box with an autumn add-on that can help you transition from season-to-season in about 15 minutes with minimal pieces leftover. I have purposefully designed the mantelscape with neutral colors so that it will go with a variety of color schemes in your room. I have also included a template that tells you where to position your pieces so you don’t have to rely on your memory. You’ve got more important things to think about than trying to remember where certain pieces go!
