Seasons of Change

This time of year can bring up all kinds of emotions. Have you ever noticed that positive and negative emotions often exist together when a big holiday approaches? Stress and worry often accompanies excitement and anticipation. We want the occasion to turn out just right.

This tension exists throughout life. Preparation for anything often takes longer than the arrival of the event or achievement. I’ve often focused on the end result as the end-all-be-all while ignoring the drudgery of the long road of preparation. However, I’ve learned that when I do that, I can miss moments of joy along the journey. Sometimes a shift in mindset is what’s needed to find those moments of joy in mundane tasks.

When I’m not present during preparation, I can also miss moments of reflection—clues that my time might be better spent doing something else. Sometimes I get caught up in what I always do or what’s tradition that I confuse it with what has to happen. Sometimes it’s as simple as asking “Is it worth it?” For example, I love Halloween. When we first bought our house, I dreamed I would have a decked-out Halloween yard, but I decided this year that I don’t need more Halloween decorations. There’s a cost associated with having more—not just the cost of the actual product, but the cost of time and energy in the future too. I realized I reached the maximum level of time and energy I want to put into decorating for Halloween. That’s not to say I’ll never change my mind, but I’m content with what I have.

It also means doing fewer things out of obligation and more time doing things that bring joy. Gathering with friends and family can be a lot of work and preparation, but (depending on the relationship) it’s often worth it in the long run. When it becomes pure drudgery, that’s a sign something needs to change.

This season, consider asking yourself the question “Is it worth it?” If not, it may be time for a change.
